Portable Dance Floor Styles
There are a dozens of different portable dance floor styles but two of them stand out from the rest. The one you choose will depend on your desired use.
-
Portable Dancing Discs
Portable dancing discs are arguably the most portable dance floors. They typically range in size from 16 inches to 48 inches. So while you won't have room to do leaps, depending on the size you select, you will have room for most stationary moves and turns. Portable dancing discs vary in quality. A high quality dancing disc will tapered edges and a Marley style surface (high quality vinyl). Additionally, you should expect the bottom to have a backing that helps it stay in place and keeps the floor beneath it damage-free.

Portable Modular Dance Floors
Modular dance floors come in squares that interlock and are held together by tapered border pieces. They are typically made from high density plastic with a durable vinyl coating. While they aren't as easy to transport as a portable dancing disc, they do generally offer more surface area. Another major upside to modular dance floors is the cost. In terms of cost per square foot, modular dance floors are hands down more cost effective than portable dancing discs.
Best Portable Dance Floors
We combined our own personal experience with hundreds of verified product reviews to come up with a selection of the best portable dance floors. Take a look at our picks below.
Dancing Disc Professional
The Dancing Disc is a portable Marley dance floor that is durable and features a tapered edge to prevent foot injuries. It comes in three sizes ranging from 16 inches to 30 inches - but in our opinion, bigger is better. The larger ones are more stable on carpeted surfaces and allow for a greater range of dance moves.

Can Portable Dance Floors (Dance Discs and Modular Floors) Be Used for Tap?
The short answer is yes, but there are portable tap dance floors that are purpose built and give off a more satisfying sound. The dance discs do a decent job for tap, but the vinyl coating does deaden the sound to some degree. The modular floors also suffer from sound deadening when tap shoes are involved, but can certainly work.
